How does coliving differ from traditional rentals?

If you’re moving to a new city for the first time, or just looking for new housing as your current lease ends, you’ve probably spent a lot of time weighing your options. And if you’ve landed on this page, then you’re probably wondering: what’s the difference between living coliving and traditional rentals? Read on to learn more.

What’s included: traditional vs. coliving

In most traditional apartments, rent covers the roof above your head and little else. With coliving at Common, your rent payment is all inclusive — from hi-speed WiFi and utilities, to furniture and household necessities. Learn more about what’s included with coliving as a member at Common.

How it’s designed: traditional vs. coliving

Most multi-bedroom apartments aren’t designed with easy roommate living in mind. In fact, many multi-bedroom apartments on the market today are 1 or 2 bedroom units converted into many rooms, cutting down on the size of private spaces, while providing inadequately sized shared spaces.

Common’s coliving homes are designed to make it easier and more comfortable to live with others. But what exactly does this mean?

  • All of our bedrooms can fit a full sized bed, nightstand, and have adequate closet space
  • Bathrooms are only shared by three people or less
  • There’s enough room in the fridge for everyone’s groceries
  • Kitchens are laid out so multiple people can cook at the same time
  • Living rooms have plenty of seating options

Plus, all of our appliances and finishes are high quality and meant to last.

Affordability

Living at Common saves our members on average $380 per month as compared to a traditional studio. These savings include the cost of utilities, WiFi, free weekly cleanings, and shared supplies. But Common members also save money and time across other areas — with a fully furnished apartment (from the couch to your utensils) you won’t have to invest in costly furniture, or spend your Saturday in line at Ikea. Our free community events also save members money on fun happenings around their city.

Flexibility

Common offers its members 6, 9, and 12-month leases, and the ability to transfer within Common homes, either within your city or across the country. With most traditional rentals, you have to sign on for a 12 month (or longer) lease, and if you’re looking for a new apartment — whether because you got a new job or just want to try out life in another city — that means breaking your lease and going through the apartment search process all over again.

Community

Living at Common also provides you with a built-in community and plenty of opportunities to get to know your neighbors while experiencing the best your city has to offer. When was the last time you got to see a Broadway show? Or try out a cool, new restaurant? At Common, those are just standard weekend activities, and they’re totally free for our members.
