5 reasons why we love Ridgewood

TwitterPinterestFacebook

If you’re looking for a neighborhood to call home in New York City, you’ve probably heard from friends and Instagram alike about neighborhoods like Williamsburg, the East Village, or Harlem. You might even be considering moving there – but before you do, you need to check out Ridgewood.

Location and convenience

Ridgewood shares its eastern border with Glendale, Middle Village, and Maspeth in Queens and its western border with Brooklyn neighborhoods like Bushwick and East Williamsburg. That means you get the best of both worlds, enjoying the diversity of Queens and the eccentricity of Brooklyn. Plus, it only takes 35 minutes to get to the city. The M train along Myrtle Avenue offers a steady, faithful, reliable service to Manhattan. You also have access to the L train, which makes major stops along 14th Street in Manhattan.

If you’re traveling to other areas in Queens and Brooklyn, skip the train. You can easily take a bus to get where you need to be in a reasonable amount of time. There are around 11 different bus routes that run through the streets of Ridgewood.

Ridgewood’s history

Ten districts in Ridgewood are listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. Some of which include Central Ridgewood Historic District, Cornelia-Putnam Historic District, Cypress Avenue East Historic District, Cypress Avenue West Historic District, and Seneca Avenue East Historic District.

Additionally, you can find 3 New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission Landmark Districts in this area: Stockholm Street Historic District, Ridgewood North Historic District, Ridgewood South Historic District. They recognize the model tenement developments built by the G. X. Mathews Company in the early 20th century that featured larger rooms and better sanitary conditions than tenements before it.

Not to mention, there are notable individual city-designated landmarks, such as the Vander Ende-Onderdonk House (a stone Dutch Colonial House built in 1661) and the Ridgewood Theater Building, built 1916.

Ridgewood knows how to eat

Ridgewood is full of delicious eateries, eclectic cafes, and fun bars. Expect to see lots of different cuisines; everything from Turkish Mediterranean, Greek, Egyptian, and Polish to Mexican, Indian, Himalayan, Italian, and Japanese. Some of our favorite restaurants are Ltauha for brunch, Nepalese Indian Restaurant for chicken tikka, and Paloma’s for tacos.

In addition, there’s a whole lot of bars in this area, but we recommend partaking in the 2-8pm Happy Hour at The Bad Old Days or the vintage-chic Talon Bar off Wyckoff Avenue. If you’re looking for a sweet treat, then head to L’imprimerie, one of our favorite bakeries in the area. For coffee, you can’t go wrong with Milk & Pull or Topos Bookstore.

There’s a lot to love about this neighborhood, but the food and drink options available on every avenue might just crown it the best neighborhood in Queens.

The local community

In Ridgewood, the local community is welcoming, friendly, and quiet, yet not quite suburban. Common member, Alison Schiffer, says that she loves Ridgewood for its “quieter, more residential feel, which is a juxtaposition to city life.” She loves spending the weekends exploring the neighborhood and patronizing local shops.

One such local shop is Stay Forever, a handmade gift store. Owners Michelle Delgado and Lisa Jee have been residents of Ridgewood for a combined 8 years and love that the community is family friendly, creative, and supportive. New residents of Ridgewood and members at Common Cypress can expect to feel welcome on day one.
