Tips for finding a roommate

Moving to a new city not only means you have to look for an apartment but you most likely also have to look for a roommate. Don’t let this last part — finding a roommate — be a last-minute decision. Who you live with is just as important as where you live. Follow these tips, and you’ll be well on your way to finding the perfect roommate and first friend in the city.

Look in all the right places.

Be resourceful. There are tons of tools out there that are designed to help you find a roommate, so try them out and get a sense of the candidate pools. The most obvious place to start is your friends and family. Reach out to them organically and ask if they know anyone in the city, or just post a status on a social media platform about your search.

If no leads come from there, then join as many Facebook groups as you can. From Gypsy Housing to Alpaca Casa, several Facebook groups are solely dedicated to apartment and roommate searches in most major U.S. cities. There’s also Craigslist, as well as many other apps to find roommates, if you’re unsuccessful on Facebook or don’t have an account. It’s the world’s largest online classified section, so there’ll be a lot of potential there.

Be honest.

Before you start reaching out to people, make sure you know what you’re looking for. Take some time to reflect on what type of roommate you will be and what type of roommate would complement that. Are you a night owl? Do you wash your dishes right away? Be honest with yourself, and be upfront about all these observations when meeting your potential roommate. This conversation will make your compatibility clear to you, so you won’t be wasting anyone’s time.

Do it together.

Once you find someone who you think is compatible, share the load of responsibilities on the moving checklist. You can apartment hunt together, or if one person already found an apartment, go furniture shopping together to decorate the shared spaces. It’ll be a great way to build your roommate-ship, and you’ll get a lot more done as a team.
